Active 10

Active 10 is part of the One You campaign from Public Health England. One You is a nationwide programme that supports adults in making simple changes that can have a huge influence on their health – changes that could help prevent diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cancer and heart disease, and reduce risk of suffering a stroke or living with dementia, disability and frailty in later life.

  •  Summer is the perfect time of year to spend a little more time outside and to be more active, but the busy nature of modern life means that it is often difficult to fit physical activity into our days
  •  The good news is that brisk walking counts as exercise. Just 10 minutes a day can make you feel better in so many ways – it gets your heart pumping faster as well as reducing the risks of long-term health conditions like heart disease and some cancers
  •  Brisk walking is simply walking faster than usual, at a pace that gets your heart pumping faster and makes you feel slightly out of breath
  •  Research shows that rather than the number of steps taken, or distance walked, it’s the combination of the intensity of the activity and how long you’re doing it for that leads to health benefits
  •  Brisk walking can quickly add up to the recommendation of at least 150 minutes a week of physical activity that the Chief Medical Officer says can help lower our risk of serious illnesses like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, dementia and some cancers
  •  Brisk walking is so good for you that healthcare professionals are recommending walking at a high intensity (briskly) in order to improve their patients’ health
  •  Whether you’re walking to work or the shops, stepping out at lunch time, or taking the dog for a walk around the local park, there are lots of ways you can fit 10 minutes of brisk walking into your day
  •  The Active 10 app is the first free app to show you when you are walking fast enough and long enough to get health benefits – it combines intensity and time, rather than just distance or steps
