Eighty-seven year old Sheila Smith is never without a book and so a visit from volunteer Roberto Costa from Enfield Council's home delivery service bearing her library books is something she cherishes.

Roberto, who is a volunteer with Royal Voluntary Service (RVS), visits Sheila every four weeks with a selection of up to 12 books on her favourite subjects: detectives, crime, mystery and history.

When Cllr Ayfer Orhan, Enfield Council's Cabinet Member for Education, Children's Services & Protection recently visited her at home, she told her that it is a marvellous service.

She said: "I am never without a book. I get up with a book and go to bed with a book and I love them. We all need more books."

In her home she had all her books ready to return to Roberto, who recently joined RVS and who run the service on behalf of Enfield Council.

Roberto explained; "Mrs Smith trusts us to choose her books now that we know what she likes - and she is always pleased to see me.

"In fact all the people that I meet are delighted when I call. I deliver to ten people every four weeks and they can borrow any items that the libraries stock - it can be music, DVDs or books. It is pleasing to visit them in this way."

Cllr Orhan, said: "I saw for myself how pleased Sheila was to see Roberto. She almost pounced on her new consignment of books and broke into broad smiles thanking him.

"He is one of our Enfield Heroes helping us to maintain a lifeline to our library members who cannot easily visit a library. If more people can offer some of their free time to help with this vital service RVS will be very pleased to hear from them. They are doing a terrific job - and it is so appreciated."
