As the Summer approaches our thoughts inevitably turn towards longer, sunnier days, picnics and street parties. So what better way to enjoy the great outdoors than spending an afternoon with friends and neighbours with a Big Lunch - all in the spirit of community.

The Big Lunch is the U.K.’s annual get together for neighbours and Enfield's residents are being encouraged to apply to host their own street party on 17 or 18 June. In that spirit, Enfield Council is giving them a helping hand by waiving the usual charge to hold street parties.

Enfield Council Cabinet Member for the Environment, Cllr Daniel Anderson, said: “This fabulous event is all about community, bringing people together from all strands of life and what better way to do so than through food!

"It is also a great opportunity to raise money for good causes. If there is a charity you'd like to support or if you just want a chance to get to know your neighbours, download your project pack and get organising.”

Applications to get involved must be received by Enfield Council by 15 May. Full guidance can be found on Enfield Council’s website at https://new.enfield.gov.uk/services/roads-and-transport/roads-and-pavements/road-closures/. The Big Lunch starter pack which has all the information needed to plan an event can be found here: https://www.edenprojectcommunities.com/get-your-free-big-lunch-starter-pack.

The Big Lunch, now in its ninth year, is an idea from the Eden Project, an educational charity and social enterprise. In 2016, 7.3 million people took to their streets, gardens and neighbourhoods to join in the Big Lunch.

The Big Lunch takes place in all types of communities, with events ranging from a handful of people to thousands, sharing food together in a simple act of friendship. By connecting people Enfield Council believes we can encourage them to make positive changes to where they live and help community groups to survive, grow and thrive.
