A range of Christmas lighting will be installed across Enfield's town centres to boost trade and support retailers over the festive period.
Enfield Council will be installing a range of Christmas lighting across the borough’s main town centres this year to boost trade and support retailers at the busiest time of the year.
Despite the Council being forced to make savings of £179 million since 2010 because of government funding cuts, and increasing pressure on services the authority is facing a further £15.5million of cuts by 2020/21.
Inspite this significant reduction, Enfield Council has allocated funding to turn Enfield’s town centres into winter wonderlands to attract shoppers.
A mix of Christmas trees, cross street lighting and lamp-post mounted lights will add to the festive spirit across Enfield Town, Palmers Green, Angel Edmonton, Winchmore Hill, Southgate and Edmonton Green.
In Enfield Town new energy efficient led lighting will be installed in trees at the Library Green and Fountain Island.
These lights will be permanently installed and illuminated to celebrate other events and festivities throughout the year and will supplement cross street lighting in Church Street, London Road and Market Square as well as the traditional tree at Fountain Island.
This year the Old Enfield Charitable Trust and the Council’s street lighting partner Bouygues Energies & Services will be providing additional funding support.
Investment in permanently installed energy efficient solutions will deliver future savings in both energy use and installation costs and similar programmes will be rolled out in other town centres starting next year.
Enfield Council’s Leader, Cllr Nesil Caliskan, said: “We want to do everything we can to support our town centre businesses during the crucial Christmas period and we will be installing fantastic displays in our town centres to brighten them up over the busiest time of the year and get more shoppers into Enfield.
“We’re committed to building a thriving economy and boosting businesses and this investment will make our town centres more magical destinations for shoppers over the festive period.”
Official light switch ons will take place in Enfield Town on Sunday 1 Dec 2019 at 5.30pm, Angel Edmonton on Thursday 28 Nov 2019 and Palmers Green on Thursday 21 Nov at 4pm.
