Attendances at Enfield Council's leisure centres have soared with residents putting their best feet forward and getting in shape.

In the last year (2015-6) 1.9 million exercise sessions were completed at the Fusion Lifestyle managed leisure centres in Enfield compared with 1,852,255 the previous year.

The stats are great news for the Council's #MoveMoreEnfield campaign which promotes a fitness drive that aims to get residents making one or two small changes a day to up their physical activity.

Enfield Council's Cabinet Member for Community Safety & Public Health, Cllr Krystle Fonyonga, said: "There are so many great initiatives taking place in the borough to keep residents fit and healthy which support our #MoveMoreEnfield campaign. Making small changes, such as walking instead of driving where possible, and using the stairs instead of a lift can dramatically increase your health and significantly reduce your chances of developing serious health complications in the future.

"You don't need to join a gym or an exercise class to get fit, we want to help our residents understand the small changes they can make in their day-to-day life to become healthier and fitter, this is what the #MoveMoreEnfield campaign is all about.

"As well as encouraging lifestyle changes we are working with our partners to make it simpler and easier than ever before to eat well and bring physical activity into your life, whatever your age."

Other initiatives designed to encourage people to be more active include:

  • The Cycle Enfield Scheme, which will see £42m of external investment come into the borough, and will not only provide a once-in-a-lifetime boost to transform our high streets and town centres and create safe and secure cycle lanes, but will also make it much easier for residents to become physically active as part of their everyday life.
  • Enfield is one of the greenest boroughs in London with many beautiful parks and open spaces which can be enjoyed for free. Many parks now have 'green gyms' which are free and sports pitches which can be used by anyone.
  • Enfield Council has been working hard to increase healthy eating in the borough. Enfield Council ran a campaign last summer encouraging people to check the sugar content of their drinks. You can also find 'Eat Well' and 'Staying active' information on this website.
