Grassroots football has received a massive boost in Enfield, following the official launch of a new state-of-the-art football pitch at Enfield Playing Fields.

The third-generation (3G), artificial pitch was opened by Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment Cllr Daniel Anderson, the Mayor of Enfield Cllr Christine Hamilton and the Cabinet Member for Education, Children's Services and Protection Cllr Ayfer Orhan, together with members of Enfield Town Football Club. There was also a special training session for a local primary school.

Students from St.John’s CofE Primary School near Clay Hill were treated to a skills class, hosted by Enfield Council’s Sports Development Team, with the enthusiastic participation of Cllr Anderson and the Mayor of Enfield in the kickabout whilst Cllr Orhan watched from the sidelines.

The pitch was made possible with a grant from the Premier League and the Football Association Facilities Fund, which is delivered by the Football Foundation* and will be used by Enfield Town FC, local schools and a range of other Enfield-based football clubs.

Cllr Anderson said: “Enfield Council wants to see more people active and engaged in physical activity. This superb new facility will help support grassroots football within the Borough. In addition, surplus revenue generated from this facility will go towards improving other grass pitches in the Borough, which means the whole of Enfield will benefit.

“The Mayor and I are thrilled to officially open this brand new 3G pitch and we would like to thank all those involved who helped make this possible. We are hoping that this fantastic facility will encourage more participation in active sport for those of all abilities, but particularly we would like to see more engagement from women, youth and those with disabilities.

"This is further evidence of our commitment to help build strong communities."

Enfield Town FC, formed in 2001 is the UK’s first supporter-owned club. Club Chairman Paul Reed said: “Enfield Town FC fully supports this initiative to enhance the Borough’s growing reputation in football. We have a clear aim to increase accessibility and the 3G pitch will help achieve this vision. Along with our partners at Enfield Council we want to be a fully inclusive club and a social centre for the community with the new pitch acting as a hub for sporting excellence.”
