Residents are being urged to put their best foot forward for National Walking Month and reap the benefits of a healthier lifestyle.

Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety & Public Health, Cllr Krystle Fonyonga, is urging people from Enfield to back the campaign, which is organised by Living Streets and runs throughout May and which aims to get more people walking so they can reap the health benefits of gentle exercise.

Living Streets suggests activities such as:

•Inviting family and friends on a walk and spend some quality time with the family

•Trying a walking meeting

•Set up a food exclusion zone by taking at least a 20 minute walk to buy or eat your lunch

•Walk to or from work or school

•Take your camera or smartphone on a walking tour of the borough’s beautiful places and snap away

•Take a long romantic stroll with a loved one; or

•Support your local shops by walking into town

Cllr Fonyonga, said: “Walking is great exercise and I’d encourage everyone to do it and reap the benefits. National Walking Month is a fabulous opportunity to hit your stride, leave the car at home and get out and about on foot.

“The principles which underpin National Walking Month support Enfield Council’s Move More Campaign which is encouraging adults to undertake at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day because all the research shows that doing that helps reduce your risk of developing a wide range of serious health conditions.”
