This week saw Enfield Council's new 'Move More' campaign being kicked off in Broomfield Park. Launched by Cllr Krystle Fonyonga, Cabinet Member for Community Safety & Public Health, the message is simple: being more active even for just 10 minutes, 3 times a day can significantly improve your health and wellbeing.
As Cllr Fonyonga walked briskly, did some simple exercises and tried out Broomfield Park's green gym she said: "When people consider getting fit they immediately think they need to join a gym, or buy expensive fitness equipment. The 'Move More' campaign is saying that you don't have to do any of this if you don't want to. You can start by leaving the car at home and walking where you can, getting off public transport one stop earlier, taking the stairs instead of using the lift or trying out one of the many green gyms that you can use for free in one of our parks."
The 'Move More' campaign is not just about getting adults active, it is also about getting kids moving as well. For children the advice is that 60 minutes of activity on a daily basis can help maintain a healthy lifestyle into adulthood. The 'Move More' campaign forms part of the Enfield 2020 sustainability programme, encouraging residents to use Enfield's open spaces and improve their health by being active.
Getting more active has a huge number of health benefits such as weight loss, lowering the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
Cllr Fonyonga continued: "It is really important that our young people spend some time away from the TV, computers and phones. Why not spend some of that time playing sports in the park or walk to school if you can? It is the small changes which can make a big difference!"
