British citizenship

This service will be ending soon, so you should book your appointment before 31 December 2018. If you want to apply for British Citizenship after this date, you must use the UK Visa and Citizenship Application Service (UKVCAS).

We work in partnership with UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to offer a checking service for anyone who wishes to apply for British nationality.

This service helps avoid delays as we check your application first to make sure it is complete before sending to UKVI. If you use this service it means you don't need to include your original documents, such as your passport, in the application.

To use this service you must complete a paper application form which can be downloaded by visiting GOV.UK

Make sure you use the most recent application form because out-of-date forms are not accepted by UKVI.

You can’t use this service if you make your application online.

To book an appointment call 020 8379 1000. We will take payment by debit or credit card over the phone when you book your appointment. You can view our fees.

Before your appointment, you should check what documents you need in the guidance booklet published by the Home Office. At your appointment the adviser will tell you if there are any documents you have missed.

If you are late or miss the appointment, or forget to bring your documents, you will need to book and pay for another one.

Appointments take place at the Enfield Register Office in Gentleman’s Row. You need to arrive ten minutes before your appointment.

At your appointment, we will:

  • check your application is completed correctly
  • make sure you have included the correct fee
  • check, copy and certify your documents so you can keep the originals
  • send your application to UKVI by secure post

Our advisers are authorised to carry out this service by the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner.

For children's applications (under 18s), the child does not need to go to the appointment. The parent making the application can go to the appointment on their child's behalf.

If you have any questions about applying for British citizenship or wish to speak to the Home Office to check your eligibility, call 0300 123 2253.

You can also use our enquiry form or call us on 020 8379 1000.

We no longer offer the Nationality Document Return (NDRS) and Passport Checking Services (JCAP). You can now apply online by visiting GOV.UK.

You can now attend one of 57 new service centres in the UK named UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS), managed by a commercial partner, Sopra Steria. You attend an appointment at a service centre to submit your biometric information (photo and fingerprints) and supporting evidence (including proof of identity).

The Home Office have set up an assisted digital support service that is available if you don’t have the appropriate access, skills or confidence to complete an online application.

The Assisted Digital Service aims to ensure that nobody is excluded from making an immigration application due to lack of digital skills or access to a computer. Eligible customers are offered telephone support, or face-to-face support at a library or their home, to help them access and complete the online form. This service does not provide immigration advice.

If you prefer to apply using the paper form, you can use the Nationality Checking Service until the end of December 2018.
